New AirPort Extreme And Time Capsule Play Nice With iPhone

March 3, 2009
It looks like the rumored Apple event for March 24th may not take place, or it may include products entirely different than what most expected because Apple has just updated all of the products rumored for the event. Early this morning, Apple unveiled the updated Mac Pro, Mac mini and iMac. If you are in the market for a new desktop, that's great news, but we are interested in the other two products that were updated. Apple has also updated the AirPort Extreme Base Station and Time Capsule. What's most interesting about the update is that it adds dual-band Wi-Fi. This means that the router is able to simultaneously work with both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all devices on the network to perform at maximum efficiency. So now your 802.11n computer and your 802.11g iPhone can be used simultaneously without the iPhone bogging down the network. This applies to both the AirPort Extreme Base Station and Time Capsule. If you already own one of the devices, it may not be worth the price of upgrading to the new version simply for this new feature. Unless you are one of those people who absolutely must own the latest and greatest. If you are in the market for a wireless router or back-up drive, however, Apple's offerings just got a bit more appealing.
