FacePlant Will Enhance FaceTime's Use

July 23, 2010

When the fourth generation iPhone is remembered, after future device releases (in addition to the antenna issue, no doubt), the FaceTime introduction will standout prominently. This iPhone 4 feature allows video conversation between two users over Wi-Fi. However, one of the drawbacks of the feature is the inability to actually know who is using an iPhone 4 and who is available via Wi-Fi. Hence, the feature is extremely limited.

That will change with FacePlant. Created by Rally Apps, Inc., the soon-to-be-released app will work with your iPhone 4's contact list and tell you when someone is available to video chat. Best of all, you'll be able to leave video chat messages for your friends that aren't currently on Wi-Fi (or don't answer your call). Other features include:
  • push notifies you when you receive a video message
  • integrates with your contact list (no friending required)
  • instantly adds new friends to your list when contacts install the app
  • lets you video conference without calling your friends first
  • has a privacy mode if you don't want to be bothered
The one drawback is that both users will need the FacePlant app installed on each iPhone 4. Yet, with the app being released as a free download at the App Store, perhaps this won't be a big deal. I'm excited about trying out this app, because its functions seem required to fully embrace the FaceTime technology. As of now, it's difficult to use the feature, since you don't know who in your contacts can utilize it. When released, FacePlant should fill this void! Again, this app will be available soon as a free download.
