Playing Darts The Fanboy Way?

July 8, 2010

If you're the kind of Apple fanboy who wants to find a game that can be played between your iPhone and iPad, then look no further; KL Dartboard may be just what you're looking for. The concept of KL Dartboard actually consists of two applications; KL Dartboard for iPad ($3.99) and KL Darts for iPhone (which is free). Both are available in the App Store now. Basically, the idea is that you launch the dartboard app on your iPad, and use the iPhone app to "throw" darts towards the virtual board. This can be done by simply shaking the iPhone. Darts launch themselves towards the board, and two margins below record the score. In theory, these apps sound extremely cool, don't you think?

Well, in reality, things don't run quite so smoothly. As your iPhone and iPad communicate with one another via Bluetooth, neither device has any real notion of where the other is - removing the object of the game itself, and leaving the user with a gimmick that is barely impressive. So far, almost every review of the application posted on iTunes has been negative - with many feeling as if the $4 price-tag attached to KL Dartboard is an outright joke. In essence, the concept is fantastic - and if it worked properly, these applications would make an absolute killing in the App Store. Instead, users are left wishing the apps actually worked. As it is, this poor imitation of a game of darts only serves to remind the user that he could be playing the real thing and having a much more enjoyable experience far away from his beloved iDevices. You can check out KL Dartboard in the App Store if you're curious, and if you have a good experience with the app, let us know in the comments box below. But in all seriousness, I'd avoid this app and save the $4.
