MobileNavigator Update Adds iPad-Optimized Interface, Retina Support, And More

December 16, 2010
If you talked yourself into a 3G iPad this year, Navigon has a little surprise for you.  Today the popular turn-by-turn GPS app developer has released an update to their MobileNavigator MyRegion apps (other versions should be updated "soon") that features an iPad-optimized interface.  But don't worry iPhone 4 owners, you haven't been left out in the cold.  The update also adds Retina display support along with a handful of other features. Amongst the six new features in MobileNavigator 1.7 is universal support, meaning it runs natively on the iPhone as well as the iPad.  The new iPad-optimized interface features higher resolution graphics and a redesigned UI, making tasks like route planning much easier.  Of course, you can also use your iPad for actual navigation as long as it is the 3G model, and everything on the screen is in proportion to the iPad display size. Retina support has also been added, which means maps, map fonts, and POIs are displayed in higher resolution. A new feature called Active Lane Assistant is able to help you stay in the correct lane by showing a live lane animation, and it is conveniently displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the map.    This feature can be switched on or off at any time. Map Report allows you to store changed road news, new speed limits, and one-way streets, so you won't make the same mistake twice, and then submit them to help improve map accuracy in the future. If you prefer, you can now receive on-screen messages with important information regarding the app itself, and sign up for Navigon's newsletter to receive exclusive offers and first-hand information. Rounding out the new feature set is Zagat Survey, an in-app purchase that allows you to view Zagat's signature ratings and reviews of over 40,000 restaurants, hotels, attractions, golf courses, and much more.  It's integrated into the app's POI search and will retail for $7.99, but is currently on sale for $5.99. All of these new features can be found immediately in all three of Navigon's MobileNavigator MyRegion apps (West, Central, and East) and most other non-US versions.  We will update you when MobileNavigator USA & Canada and USA receive the new features as well, which we have been informed will be "soon." Navigon has also released a new free app titled help2park.  It's an ad-based app that simply helps you find parking places in your surrounding area based on your current location.  It is able to display the location via Google Maps and provides you with an address and phone number.  If you have MobileNavigator installed, it can actually take you right to the parking spot. This is just the first of many free apps Navigon intends to offer in the new year, so stay tuned.
