Talkatone Is Getting Text Support - It's The Google Voice App To Rule Them All

April 9, 2011
Google Voice is an amazing service. Unfortunately, right now the only way to properly take advantage of it on iOS requires two different apps. First, something to deal with your texts; either Google's official client, or some other alternative like GV connect. Then, there is the great Talkatone, which allows you to plug into the voice part of Google voice and call over a data connection (without paying for minutes or roaming). The thing is, if you rely a lot on Google Voice, having two apps on your homescreen is inconvenient. That should soon be a thing of the past as we have just learned from the developers of Talkatone. They have now managed to add texting to their app. They're currently beta testing it, and they confirmed that their next version will support Google Voice's text messaging. Soon you will be able to get rid of your secondary texting client. Hopefully, the app should be available in about two weeks. Again, this is a great deal. The app is free, and all you need is a free Google Voice account to place and receive unlimited calls (and soon texts) in the U.S. and Canada, from anywhere in the world. All you need is a 3G or Wi-Fi connection, and you're basically turning your carrier into a simple wireless ISP. That sounds like the future to me. Talkatone is available now, for free, for the iPhone, on the App Store.
