Our Choice Brings Attention To Climate Change And The Future Of Digital Publications
Our Choice ($4.99) by Push Pop Press, Inc. is an interactive book which focuses on the world climate crisis campaign led by former Vice President Al Gore. This app is an addition to his recent New York Times best selling book by the same name. Our Choice shows that a digital book is capable of more than just words on a screen. If you have followed global warming you will appreciate this app. All proceeds from the purchase of this app will go to the non-profit organization, The Alliance For Global Protection.
The app boasts a multi-touch interface. It includes over an hour of video documentary coverage, 30 animations and more than 250 photos. Tap the globe icon on a photo and it will show you, on a map, where the photo was taken. Each page is a complex multimedia experience, which I believe will change the future of digital books. According to Al Gore, this app includes new material and added images, so if you have already read his book, there will be more to learn and enjoy.
To read Our Choice, you navigate the pages and chapters by swiping the smaller pages located at the bottom of the screen. When you locate the chapter you would like to read, the navigation bar will disappear. Each page has some type of interactive graphic or video. The graphics will expand and provide more in depth information for research and study. Some of the photos have an audio commentary and the videos include interviews with experts in the field. Al Gore narrates most of the audio and video in the app.
Hopefully a couple of improvements will come soon. Right now there is no social integration such as Facebook in the app. This would seem logical if you want to spread the word on this campaign. Also, you are unable to search within the app for keywords or categories. This would make it easier for research, or for those who want to read about a specific subject.
You probably have to be on board with Al Gore’s position on climate change in order to enjoy Our Choice. If you purchased his book and believe there are small steps we all can take to change a global problem, Our Choice will be an enjoyable read. It is a learning experience that definitely raises the bar for other e-publishers.
