Whether A Match-3 Master Or Casual Puzzler, You'll Enjoy FDG's Latest: Thingy Blox HD

June 11, 2011
Yesterday, FDG Entertainment released Thingy Blox HD, a match-3 style game with plenty of fun graphics, sounds, music, content, and gameplay. The game offers local single and 2-player modes, three gameplay types, plus Game Center and social network integration. Thingy Blox isn't your typical match-3 game. Like other titles of the genre, having the same color squares next to each other for elimination is important, however, it isn't top priority of this game. Instead, an object category name will be displayed on-screen, and you must tap any square that contains an object from that category. Preferably, you'll choose a square with same-color squares joined and they'll all disappear, which provides combo points and a greater multiplier. Each of the three gameplay types consists of those two basic requirements if you desire to earn a really high score. Timed play is just that; you'll have two, three, or four minutes to achieve as many points as you can. Strategy play has no time limits, but it also does not replenish the blocks. In Strategy, large eliminations per move are the only way to score big. Challenge play turns the game clock into a per move clock. Locate those appropriate squares quickly because you'll only have a few seconds per turn. When it comes time to compete against a friend, you won't be lost or disappointed -- depending upon if you lose or not. Multiplayer is done locally, and is described just like being in the "hot seat." Both players can look at the gameplay area simultaneously or do a Pass 'n Play approach. Gameplay is a combination of Timed and Challenge, where there is a game and per turn timer. Failing to accommodate the turn timer will result in the next player's move. There is one final thing to discuss. Thingy Blox has two difficult levels: Normal and Tricky. Basically, the difference is block size. Smaller block size means tougher to identify and more on-screen to deal with. The more casual gameplay types won't seem too noticeably different, however, Timed and Challenge play really can become problematic. Thingy Blox HD is compatible with iPad running iOS 4.3 or later, and available in the App Store for $2.99. [gallery link="file" columns="4"]
