ShotList ($29.99) by Soluble is a filmaker’s production scheduling app that is so well-designed it would impress Franklin Covey. This app is a niche twist on the traditional GTD productivity app in that it is dedicated to organizing and tracking film shoots.

When using the app the first thing you will do is start a new project. Once you have named your film, you can begin filling your Production Stripboard with projected shoots. Each “strip” contains information for that day’s shoot. You can include: scene number, shot setup, script page, location, short description for the shot, and list of actors and notes that pertain to that day’s shoot. You can color code the strip based on its status of: to-do, delay, cut, or done. Once you have your stripboard set, you can reschedule shots as you go. For example, if you intend to have an exterior shot on a rainy day, you can easily switch shots by selecting and dragging strips into a different spot.

By selecting the camera icon on a strip, you can go to the storyboard feature where you can take pictures from your iPad 2 or iPhone, or select them from your camera roll or library. You can use this feature to upload storyboard drawings, save continuity shots, or research locations.

You can send the schedule you have just created to the cast and crew by selecting the online scheduling feature. You can select recipients from your contacts list and a mass email will be sent with the pertinent scheduling information. You can also easily export your project to Dropbox and access the entire file right from within the app.

Overall, this is a top-notch organizational app for filmmakers. The ease of use and file sharing capabilities make it a great addition to a film’s success. The price of the app seems too steep, in my opinion, but after a quick online search, I found that production scheduling software can be fairly expensive. How this app compares to the features included with the $100 to $300 programs is unknown to me, as I am not in the movie industry. If this app holds up as comparable to the higher priced software, than I would call this a great bargain and a definite buy.
