Nokia Maps Now Available On iOS — True Mobile Hipsters Thrilled
August 10, 2011
If Google Maps or Bing have never really been the mapping solution you've been dreaming about, and you're really more of a Nokia maps fanboy, you'll be absolutely thrilled to know that Nokia maps are now available for iOS as a Web app.
Located at http://m.maps.nokia.com/, the Nokia Maps beta is almost a decent maps application. It's written in HTML5, and it can find your position through your iDevice's location services. It supports pinch-to-zoom, sharing, and it can find routes (but apparently not between Europe and the US if you go by car), and even restaurants though a "pizza near me" query. In Paris, it suggests that I should check out some very remote, random place in Croatia. It works on any iOS device with a data connection, and it's free.
You have the ability to check out location details, and to switch between the traditional and satellite mode. Though, the resolution won't let you get very close with the satellite mode. The traditional cartography however, especially if you're looking for roads and highways, is actually decent.
Of course, I don't need to tell you that this is nowhere near as good as Google Maps, and its lack of success is guaranteed. Yet, it's kinda cute to see Nokia still trying.
