Colosseum Heroes. (Free) by GAMEVIL Inc. turns your iDevice into a colosseum.

Fight your way through hordes of baddies in this side-scroller in order to score the key that unlocks the exit. A combination of ranged and melee weapons will help get the job done. Smiting your enemies results in a gush of blood, especially when you are rocking the critical hits.

You have your choice of warrior or vampire. In addition to choosing a different character with different weapons, the levels also differ.

The warrior stages have you fighting orcs, reminiscent of those in "Lord of the Rings." The vampire fights wolves on a spooky field.

The tutorial starts you off in the item shop, where you can purchase weapons and equipment. You’re shown the left and right movement buttons, as well as the attack buttons. Once the formalities are out of the way, it’s time to commence the carnage.

It doesn’t take long for trouble to find you (unless you’re playing easy mode). The orcs or wolves will attack from both sides, so it’s a good idea to get your back to a wall.

Other than that, the only strategy is to keep tapping your weapon buttons until you clear the monsters (those that want to turn the blood off can do so in the options menu).

Once you die you can either buy a rebirth item to revive without a penalty, or revive with the penalty of losing all of your earned money.

My biggest pet peeve with this game is that your health doesn’t regenerate between levels. So that means if you passed one level by the skin of your teeth, you’ll be starting pretty grim for the next round.

While you collect gold coins from killing the monsters, you can also pony up real money to purchase more beastly weapons and equipment in the premium shop.

This is a fun game, though hacking at baddies gets repetitive after a while. Still, it’s worth a shot for free.
