iOS 5.0.1 Eliminates Smart Cover Security Issue

November 3, 2011
Two weeks after word spread that iOS 5 included a dangerous security bug for those using a Smart Cover with an iPad 2, comes some good news. Apple’s recently released iOS 5.0.1 fix eliminates the problem, according to Cult Of Mac. Released late last night to registered developers, iOS 5.0.1 primarily addresses the rumored iPhone 4S battery issues. However, the update also removes the ability for Smart Covers to unlock an iPad without requiring a user to type in a password.
The company hasn’t turned off the Smart Cover’s ability to put the device to sleep altogether — just while the ‘slide to power off’ button is displayed.
As a review and as the attached video shows, the current Smart Cover security breach could expose strangers to your personal information. To re-create this situation, follow these instructions:
  1. Lock a password protected iPad 2
  2. Hold down power button until iPad 2 reaches turn off slider
  3. Close Smart Cover
  4. Open Smart Cover
  5. Click cancel on the bottom of the screen

Since developers only yesterday received iOS 5.0.1, we’d expect it won’t be made available to the public until at least next week. In the meantime, as a temporary solution to this problem, follow these instructions: Go General > iPad Cover Lock / Unlock and change the setting to the OFF position. We’ll keep you updated.
