The iOS Academy: Pushing Gmail To Your iOS Device

November 2, 2011
The iOS Academy is back! I hope you're ready to take in more iOS knowledge. Today we're going to be looking at how to get Google Gmail to push to your iOS device. We've heard there is a rumored Gmail app coming to iOS devices soon, but just in case you can't wait, App Advice has you covered. I'm sure some of you are wondering "How is this different from the normal Mail app setup?" The difference is that when you add a Gmail account using the normal Mail app setup your emails arrive every 15, 30, or 60 minutes, depending on how your pull settings are configured. The way we're about to show you uses push services so that you receive your emails in real time as the account receives them.
The Credentials Needed
The first thing you will want to do is go to your settings app, tap "Mail, Contacts & Calendar," then Add Account. Now choose Microsoft Exchange and you're ready to enter your Gmail credentials. You want to leave the domain field blank and make sure you use your full Gmail address as the username, then enter your password. Now, just tap next and enter m.google.com into the server field and you'll be taken to the next set of options. Here you will have the options of switching your contacts, calendar, or mail on or off, depending on what you would like to have sync with Google. Keep in mind that this also works with Google apps users and Notification Center so you'll always be up to date.
Sync with Gmail
You are all set up! Just open up your Mail app, let it sync and you should be good to go. You may want to note that this will put a bit more strain on the iPhone's already less than stellar battery life but I believe it is worth it. Odds are you are keeping your changer closer nowadays anyway. Hopefully this will tide you over until we receive the fabled Gmail for iOS app. If you need any more info you can visit Google's support page or just let me know. I'll see you tomorrow for more iOS how-to goodness.
