Space Kiwi ($0.99) by ORRO Apps is a fun filled forward scrolling arcade style game that might just be the cutest bird related game around. Take flight with this non-stop action adventure today.
Using tilt controls on your iPhone/iPod touch or iPad, help Space Kiwi avoid obstacles and collect coins. Tap the screen to aim and shoot at oncoming moon men and take down high flying moon shuttles. At times, moon men will get too close for shooting and players will have to control Space Kiwi’s movement to fly over the enemies at just the right moment.
There are six different worlds, each with 10 levels to complete. Space Kiwi starts on land with the first world. His next adventure takes him out to sea and then up into the fluffy pink clouds. Eventually, Space Kiwi must fight the invading moon men on their own turf for the final world, Morbid Moon Zone.
The gameplay is challenging and exciting. Each level gets harder than the previous, forcing players to tilt and tap multiple oncoming enemies at once. The movement is forward scrolling. Space Kiwi will automatically fly forward while the player must time left and right movement precisely to avoid obstacles, while tapping the screen to blast away enemies.
The artwork is as adorable as can be. Backgrounds consist of pastel hues with puffy imagery. Space Kiwi himself looks like Q-Bert with a kawaii (Japanese for cute) makeover. The electronica soundtrack fits perfectly with the design and theme of the game.
It is important to note that Space Kiwi is not available for anything older than the third generation iPod touch, iPhone 3GS, and iPad. While playing the game on a fourth generation iPod touch, I experienced crashes a couple of times, but only on the level select screen, never during game play.
Overall, this universal game is entertaining and challenging. The cute factor is so high that even the most hardened of hearts will melt, but the action is so good that teenaged boys won’t be embarrassed to brag about their high scores. Space Kiwi is sure to be the next big hit. Pick it up for only $0.99 in the App Store.
