Frame Artist with Templates Pro ($1.99) by Darinsoft brings a new twist to the “frame app” genre. Yes, there are a number of pre-set templates that let you put your photos together into a single frame. But universal app Frame Artist with Templates Pro goes far beyond that. The given templates allow you to create items such as invitations, calendars, and business cards. Or you can create (and save) your own templates from scratch, with nearly endless possibilities.
Unlike many similar apps, you’re not limited to using photos from your camera or photo library. You can also pull in photos from your Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, Instagram, or Tumblr accounts. In addition to putting your photos together, you can add artistic flourishes to them. Add speech balloons, text, and stickers. Add one of the seventeen artistic filters to complete the look.
When you complete your project, you can save the template if you want to be able to use it again. Then, save your project to your camera roll or share it via e-mail, SMS, Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr, Picasa, or Twitter. You can save it as a small file (640x742), medium (960x1113), large (1280x1485), or max (1920x2227).
I didn’t find the app super easy or intuitive to use. Once I spent some time with it, I realized what a powerful tool it can be. Still, it’s a little buggy. It crashed a couple of times when I was using it, and one item had some “shadow text” on it in the finished product. I would think the bugs should be eliminated in future updates. In fact, the developer tells me they are already planning the next several updates, which will include some nice features. The next update will include the ability to create stickers from your own photos and add them to the sticker pool for use in your projects. The update after that will include brushes for free-hand drawing. And a third update will include web search, so you can use photos from the web.
I recommend trying the free version first. It has all of the same features, but you are limited to saving or sharing only five photos. An in-app purchase removes this limit, just like buying the Pro version.
