AppAdvice App Of The Week For August 6, 2012

August 6, 2012

Every week, our staff will handpick an app from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These apps will always be from various categories, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and have been using them daily. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy!

Amazon Instant Video

If you’re an Amazon Prime member, then you’re in luck this week. Amazon has just released their own Amazon Instant Video app in the App Store.

What can you do with this app? Users will be able to stream thousands of Prime Instant Videos, right on their iPad. You are even able to save any purchased or rented videos for offline viewing later, which is pretty darn handy.

While Prime membership will cost you $79 a year (or less if you are a student), it will get you free two-day shipping on eligible products as well as full access to their collection of over 120,000 videos. In addition to being able to view video offline, you can keep track of stuff you want to view in the Watchlist, and enjoy the top video titles that are currently being offered.

If you’re using the app on multiple devices, don’t worry — Amazon’s Whispersync technology has got you covered. It will sync your spot between devices, so you can resume watching from the moment you left off on. This applies to a wide variety of devices: Kindle Fire, PS3, PC, Mac, and plenty of enabled television sets and Blu-ray players.

For those that use the TV Season Pass feature of Amazon Prime, you’ll get new episodes of your favorite TV shows a day after they air, so you will always be up-to-date.

Currently, the AirPlay streaming feature in the Amazon Instant Video app will only work with audio, and not video. This is a shame, but it should be able to be fixed in an update from Amazon. If you have an Amazon Prime membership, then make sure to grab this app in the App Store!

Honorable Mention

Projectbook

Have you ever wanted your notes and to-dos in the same app? Now you can, with Projectbook!

So what exactly is Projectbook? It’s a new notebook app that is able to hold all of the stuff you may need to refer to: notes, to-do lists, Word documents, PDFs, Web clips, sketches, and even photos. Because all of this data will be readily available to you within Projectbook, users can manage to-dos and projects by linking related information.

The app has a clean and easy-to-use interface that makes organizing everything much easier. While some may think this sounds like Evernote, you don’t need to have a premium subscription to store various documents in Projectbook, nor do you need a data connection to access your data. It’s definitely a great alternative to the green elephant that’s worth looking into.

You can grab Projectbook for $1.99 up until August 15, at which it will then return to the normal price of $6.99. The app will work on the iPad 2 and 3rd-generation iPad running at least iOS 5 and later.
