An interesting app helps turn the iPhone into a privacy protecting burn phone with disposable numbers. Burner allows a user to get multiple phone numbers from a preferred area code. Each number can be named to keep track of its purpose. While using the app, inbound and outbound calls forward to and use your actual phone line and cell phone minutes, but the real number is kept private in both directions. Users can also receive and reply to SMS messages with the burn number. Burner is only compatible with the iPhone and can be downloaded for $1.99 in the App Store. The app comes with enough credits to create a mini-burner that will expire after 20 minutes of voice time and/or 60 text messages, or after 7 days, whichever comes first. The number can also be burned by a user at any time. To purchase another burner or extend the life of a number, there are different in-app purchase options, ranging in price from $1.99 to $11.99. Not surprisingly, burn numbers don’t support 911 or MMS service. But I can definitely see a number of ways a service like this would come in handy. Before the advent of iMessage, I used numerous texting services with the same basic idea, but being able to make phone calls with a disposable number is really a great idea.
