Ping’s Gone, So Where Is iTunes 11?

October 1, 2012
It’s official: Ping is no more. Apple’s failed social music network is no longer available in iTunes. Originally launched in 2010, Ping attempted to combine the celebration of music with social networking. Unfortunately, as Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned in May 'the customer voted and said 'this isn't something that I want to put a lot of energy into'." Last month, Apple began sending out emails stating that Ping would cease operations after Sept. 30. Instead iTunes 11, which should arrive sometime in October, will include a new social element through Facebook integration. Details on the new iTunes version remain thin, except for a short demo presented by Apple at the iPhone 5 event. Rumors suggest, however that it could include a music streaming service for the first time. Perhaps we’ll hear more at the possible iPad Mini event on Oct. 17. Stay tuned.
