Ahead Of WWDC, Could This Be iOS 7 Beta?

June 10, 2013
With less than 12 hours remaining until Apple's WWDC 2013 keynote address is set to commence, 9to5Mac has posted an image of the anticipated "new look" of iOS 7's app icons. As you can see in the above image, the seventh iteration of Apple's mobile operating system indeed seems to feature a "flat," minimalist design, rather dissimilar to the appearance of the company's previous iOS releases. While the above image isn't Apple's official iOS 7 icon set ("Apple embeds little watermarks that could land the source in some trouble," the website explains), 9to5Mac nevertheless asserts that the picture is based off a previous "quick peek" of an early iOS 7 beta. The website provides an overview of the changes:
  • iTunes is Purple-ish with white (iSync-like arrows instead of a music note).
  • Camera is Gray gradient and icon is same shape as you see on the lock screen
  • Facetime is like it used to be without the gray. and flat. [sic]
  • The Maps icon is a different place. Perhaps near the Spaceship campus?
  • Compass icon is darker and flatter.
  • Safari icon is like the Mac circle icon without the silver frame.
  • Photos icon is a color wheel
  • Game Center is similar to the photos icon – totally different than before.
What is most interesting, however, is the fact that 9to5Mac cites two separate color schemes for most of the Home screen icons reproduced above: "one black-ish, and one white-ish." While acknowledging that these could be A/B decoys, the website goes on to speculate either that different colored iPhones may feature individual color schemes, or rather that Apple's iOS 7 could offer a "night mode" display based on ambient light levels or the time of day. Finally, 9to5Mac argues that improvements to the Apple Maps app along with enhanced sharing options (including AirDrop support) will also launch with iOS 7. Apple's WWDC 2013 keynote is set to commence at 10 a.m. PDT. Check back with us for all the news as it's announced.
