Apple has informed developers that Mac apps will soon be able to participate in the company's "Volume Purchase Program," which makes it possible for educational institutions to purchase applications and iBooks in volume, and distribute them to students and staff.
Though already available for iOS applications, TUAW explains that Mac developers have recently been informed that their apps, too, will soon be able to participate in the program.
Not only does this mean schools will be able to mass purchase Mac applications to use in the classroom, but institutions will also be able to receive a discount of up to 50 percent on purchases when buying 20 copies or more of a participating Mac app.
The details are explained at Apple's website:
It’s quick and easy to set up your organization for volume purchasing. First, designate yourself or someone else in your organization as the Program Manager. Then you can sign up Program Facilitators, which will allow them to make purchases. If your institution is tax exempt, you will not be charged sales tax. The program also allows app developers to offer special pricing for purchases of 20 apps or more.Apple's Volume Purchase Program is available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In the United States, both K-12 schools and degree-granting Higher Education institutions can take part in the scheme.
