Spotify Update Brings Free Music To iOS Users

January 8, 2014
First announced last month, Spotify has just updated its iOS app, introducing a free music service to rival iTunes Radio and Pandora. Version 0.9.2 of the app handles free music streaming differently for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad/iPad mini users. On smaller devices, music lovers can listen to their favorite artists and playlists in shuffle mode. Users can also shuffle play the entire catalog of a specific artist, which is different from Pandora. The iPad system more closely mirrors the desktop version of Spotify as users can listen to any song at anytime. Both versions will obviously be supported by advertisements between songs. Spotify is a universal app and can be downloaded now for free in the App Store. For a $9.99 per month charge, users can become premium members and listen to whatever they would like without any advertisements. Premium users can also download Spotify music directly to their iOS device and listen offline, which is a lifesaver when on a long plane flight or car travel with spotty data service.
