New crowdsourced app WeatherSignal uses the barometer inside the iPhone 6

October 9, 2014

We’ve seen a few fitness apps take advantage of the barometer in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to track how many flights of stairs a user has traversed. But a new app is taking the data in a different direction.

WeatherSignal hopes to compile a live update of weather conditions worldwide using barometric pressure data. If you’re not a weather nerd like I am, changes in barometric pressure can help forecast different types of weather trends.

Along with providing data, the app shows nearby pressure readings from other users and your own information.

Data can also be viewed on WeatherSignal’s site now.

The app can be downloaded now from the App Store for free. Only iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners will be able to contribute barometric pressure information. Other iPhone users can only view the live data.

All information is shared anonymously. To help preserve your iPhone’s battery life, pressure information is only taken when the app is open.
