TasteForFree

TasteForFree

Brendan Carey

TasteForFree is a directory of free wine tastings throughout the state of California.

With the recent growth and commercialization of California's wine industry, many wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms are charging increasing tasting fees while providing poor service.

Luckily, there are still over 180 wineries throughout the state that offer complimentary tastings to visitors. TasteForFree can be used with or without a network connection to find free tastings at wineries near your device's location or by a standard zip code/city search.

The app provides winery information, average bottle price, number of wines to sample for free, average winery rating based on Yelp! and TripAdvisor reviews, tasting room hours, directions to the tasting room, and any electronic coupon that may be needed for the complimentary tasting.

This app does NOT feature any wineries that charge a tasting fee and credit it toward a purchase, require a special credit card or wine club membership, or require a printed-out coupon for tasting.

Note that mapping, directions, and visiting winery websites will not work without a data or wifi connection.

TasteForFree includes free tastings from wineries in Mendocino, Sonoma, Napa, Lake County, Lodi, Livermore, Santa Cruz, the Central Valley, Solano County, Monterey County, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbera.

Remember to drink responsibly and always have a designated driver when touring the California wine regions.

Also, remember that the wineries featured in TasteForFree are businesses and are providing a complimentary service to visitors. If you find a wine you like, buy a bottle!

ARTAX

Stay up-to-date on the wines you have tasted – easily, quickly and without unnecessary complexity. Rate wines the way professionals do.

If you visit wine tasting events and try various wines, this application is for you. Make notes, record information on individual samples and stay perfectly up-to-date on the wines you have tasted. If you wish to work with the data further on a PC, you can simply send your records to any e-mail address.

Are you unsure about how to systematically rate wines? Don’t worry - it’s not difficult at all. You can now rate wines in the way professionals do, and it’s really easy. Our application enables you to work easily with the 100-point scale which is commonly used at international competitions and in prestigious publications.

Individual characteristics of a wine are rated separately. First rate appearance, then aroma and finally taste. Each of these characteristics is further broken down into:

Appearance
* clarity
* colour (to what degree colour corresponds to variety, year, type of wine, etc.)
Aroma
* intensity
* purity (to what degree aroma corresponds to variety, year, type of wine, etc.)
* harmony
Taste
* intensity
* purity (to what degree aroma corresponds to variety, year, type of wine, etc.)
* harmony
* persistence (how long the taste impression lasts)

The overall impression is rated last. This rating shows how the wine “suits” you and how its individual characteristics go together.

Give each characteristic a rating on a scale of 1 to5, where 1 is best and 5 worst:

1 excellent
2 very good
3 good
4 satisfactory
5 unsatisfactory

The marks in each category correspond to points which vary among characteristics depending on the weighting of the characteristic concerned. You can simply switch to view the assigned points in the application in order to learn the 100-point system better.

The resulting score will be within a range of 40 to 100 points:

40 - 69 undrinkable wine
70 - 74 mediocre wine
76 - 79 wine that makes no particular impression
80 - 84 good everyday drinking wine without serious flaws
85 - 89 very good wine
90 - 94 excellent wine, worth tasting
95 - 100 wine of the absolute highest quality, unique and fantastic

If you just want to test wine rating using the 100-point scale, you can try our application “WinRater” which is available for free at AppStore.

Calculator for wine evaluation

Calculator for wine evaluation

ARTAX

Evaluate wine like a professional. You will be using a 100-point scale that is widely used in international competitions and prestigious publications. Not sure where to start? Don’t give up, it isn’t at all difficult. Use a simple marking system, from 1 to 5.

Individual characteristics of a wine are evaluated separately. First you give a mark to appearance, then aroma, and finally taste. Each of these characteristics is further broken down into:

Appearance
* clarity
* colour (to what degree colour corresponds to the varietal, year, type of wine, etc.)
Aroma (“nose”)
* intensity
* purity (to what degree aroma corresponds to the varietal, year, type of wine, etc.)
* harmony
Taste
* intensity
* purity (to what degree taste corresponds to the varietal, year, type of wine, etc.)
* harmony
* persistence (how long the taste impression lasts)

Finally you evaluate overall impression. With this you express how the much the wine is to your taste, and how the individual characteristics go together.

Give every quality a mark on a 5-point scale, where 1 is best and 5 is worst:

1 excellent
2 very good
3 good
4 satisfactory
5 not satisfactory

The mark then is given points, which can vary depending on the relative importance of the characteristic concerned. The points awarded can be displayed in the application at the press of a button.

The resulting score is in the range of 40-100 points:

40 - 69 undrinkable wine
70 - 74 mediocre wine
76 - 79 a wine that makes no particular impression
80 - 84 a good everyday drinking wine without serious flaws
85 - 89 very good wine
90 - 94 excellent wine, worth tasting
95 - 100 wine of the absolute highest quality, unique and fantastic

When you want to evaluate the next wine, you can clear the assigned points either by pushing the button with a wastepaper basket
or by shaking the device.
