Reuters News

Thomson Reuters

Reuters News

For readers who appreciate solid reporting across all areas.

The Reuters app is full of unbiased information from around the world. If you're looking for great news coverage that many other news organizations use as their source – look no further than this fantastically laid out app. Discover stories that explore a wide range of topics, including Politics, Opinion, and Oddly Enough.Create and edit your personal watchlist of news tickers. Read online or save stories and read them later offline

Why we love it

With a variety of news topics covering tons of areas, Reuters News is a great source.

The New York Times

The New York Times

The New York Times Company

For news hounds that want the real story.

The New York Times is widely considered one of the most prestigious names in news, which makes its iPhone app a must-have. Non-subscribers are limited to viewing “top news,” but that covers a wide range and the rest of the app’s functionality, including push notifications, is intact. Articles are well-formatted and load quickly, but the use of an animated banner ad in the bottom of the screen (even for subscribers and occasionally in full screen mode) detracts from the reading experience.

Why we love it

In a world full of fake news, it's good to know some places still value journalistic ethics. Not every story is correct, but they've all been vetted by trained journalists and top-tier editorial teams. If you want the real story, the NYT is one of the best.

Get the Local Scoop

Stay up to date on local happenings with these local TV news apps.

Financial News

Keep track of markets, financial news, and more with these apps.

MarketWatch - News & Data

MarketWatch - News & Data

Dow Jones & Company, Inc., publisher of The Wall Street Journal.

Although more of a stock tracker, Market Watch can be an excellent source for financial news. The interface is great and the realtime stock graph is especially cool. Another great thing that this app does is display the stocks that have been in the news, which of course helps a potential buyer of a particular stock. Even after paying for this app, there are enough ads to annoy you quite a bit. I think that this is the main downfall of this app, but if you can live with the ads and don't mind paying a few bucks, then give Market Watch a run.

RSS Newsreaders

Grab your own news feeds from the old-school news feed system, RSS.

lire (Full-text RSS)

lire (Full-text RSS)

Fliper

Love RSS feeds? So do we!!

RSS feeds are a great way to follow updates on your favorite website. However, some sites set up their feeds to only show a portion of each entry, you know, to get you to click through to their actual website. We find that really annoying, and we're sure you do too.

Which is why, unlike other RSS feed readers, that either push you into a browser (in-app or otherwise), or depend on third party text parsing services and require you to be online to fetch the full text of one article at a time (which makes it no different from having to click/tap through to a website), in lire, you get your favorite RSS feeds as they should've been. You don't need to click through to any website (though, you do still have the option to, if you really wanted). It takes your favorite partial feeds, does it's magic, and converts them in to full feeds, so you don't have to click/tap on those annoying 'Read more' or 'Continue reading' links.

Once they're cached, you don't even need to be connected to read your full-text feeds.

Use as a standalone feed reader,

or,

sync with any of the several services: Feedly, Feedbin, FeedHQ, The Old Reader, Inoreader, BazQux Reader, Newsblur, Feed Wrangler.

Aggregators - All You Need in One Place

Need to stay informed but don't have a lot of time to look at all your news apps? Aggregators bring the news to you in a single app.

Flipboard: News for our time

Your news interests done your way

Flipboard: News for our time

Flip through your news

For those who like a customized news feed.

Flipboard deserves its spot as one of the best known news and content aggregation apps on the iOS platform. The app is beautifully designed, optimized for iPhone use, can be connected to most social media accounts, and now even supports podcasts and music via an in-app player. Flipboard’s true power lies in its content catalog, which includes many of the biggest names in blogs and news, any website with an RSS feed or Twitter account, and, most importantly, content chosen by Flipboard staff and other interesting personalities. These curated topics are similar to sections in a newspaper, but they combine information from many different sources— it is essentially a folder in an RSS reader, only you don’t have to create it. More, Flipboard continually updates its catalog and creates new curated topics for timely events; for example, in March, I used Flipboard’s NCAA March Madness section to help fill out my bracket. The app is very responsive, but lacks a list or headline-only view, which is likely to disappoint those who want a quick overview of current news. Although there is room for improvement (e.g., the ability to add more sources to your flipboard), Flipboard is still a top option for news reading on the iPhone.

Why we love it

Flipboard offers a super nice, customizable interface. View categories in a tiled layout, search by keyword, follow friends, and receive shared stories from other users. Flipboard is perfect when you want to get serious about tailoring your news interests.

Quartz Brief

The customized notifications are great, the Apple Watch support is a definite plus, and overall it is just a light and pleasant way to check out the news each day.

Why we love it

Quartz makes consuming news a fun conversation. Instead of being tasked to read an entire story you get the headlines. Want more info and you'll get it. Want less info you can just move on to the next story.

Tech Today is perfect for your commute (but please, not while driving!) or while in line at your favorite coffee shop.

AppAdvice

AppAdvice

AppAdvice.com

Is this shameless? Yes. Is it true? Also yes. The AppAdvice app is by far the best place to go to find app news and advice. Although it is heavy on the application side, the site does still post more then its fair share of Apple-related headline news. In terms of app usability, its UI really shines through. They didn't just shove out a glorified reader for the iPhone (note some of the apps here), it really is another experience consuming AppAdvice on your mobile device rather then your desktop. Especially with its price drops, app movers and app updates links. Hey, I work for them and could get it for free, but I even paid for it. It's that good. Ok, now onto the non-affiliated apps!
