The Coronation of DYMM Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar as the Fifth Sultan of Modern Johor will be held on Monday 23rd March 2015 at Istana Besar.

His consort DYMM Raja Zarith Sofiah Binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah will be crowned together with him. She will be conferred the title Permaisuri at the ceremony.

A Coronation is uniquely Johor. Rulers of other Malay States are installed.

DYMM Sultan Ibrahim was installed and proclaimed Sultan of Johor on 23rd January 2010

The Coronation is not a legal requirement but is a customary. It enhances the Ruler’s dignity, sovereignty, a source and fountain of justice and mercy. Article 4 of Part V of the Statutes of the Courts, Palace and Religious establishments 1922 provides the coronation of The Sultan may be held at any time The Ruler so desires.

Sultan Abu Bakar was crowned on 29th July 1886, 23 Years after ascending the throne. His son Ibrahim was crowned on 2nd November 1895 Six Months after his proclamation. Sultan Ismail was crowned Six Months after ascending the throne. Sultan Iskandar did not wish to be crowned.

The Coronation an amalgamation of Islamic, Malay and Western culture and rituals will be exclusive and based on previous coronation rituals to preserve and enrich royal traditions.
