Apple is also looking to the future of wireless cellular service. According to Business Insider, Apple has applied with the FCC to test 5G millimeter wave technology.

The experimental license was signed by Apple and submitted to the FCC. Here’s more from the report:

“Apple Inc. seeks to assess cellular link performance in direct path and multipath environments between base station transmitters and receivers using this spectrum,” Apple wrote in its application.

“These assessments will provide engineering data relevant to the operation of devices on wireless carriers’ future 5G networks,” it continued.

The technology will be tested at two locations – one in Milpitas, California and another near its current 1 Infinite Loop headquarters in Cupertino, California. Testing will take no longer than one year.

5G service should offer vastly improved speed and connectivity for cellular-enabled devices like the iPhone and some iPad models.

It will be a few years, at the earliest, before we see 5G technology commonplace from both carriers and device manufacturers. T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon have already detailed plans for 5G service.
