A simple act of kindness can make the world of difference, especially when you’re in school.

Back in August, Florida State football player Travis Rudolph saw a young boy eating by himself when making a visit to a local middle school. He decided to sit down by the autistic student – Bo Paske. Someone at the school snapped a photo, and the gesture went viral, showing what true kindness is all about.

Students can also select to become Ambassadors for their schools.

And a new app, Sit With Us, wants bring that same spirit to every school lunchroom.

App creator Natalie Hampton knows the effects of bullying first hand. The 16-year-old Californian was took inspiration from being bullied in middle school and having to eat lunch by herself. She talks about the experience on the app’s site:

Sit With Us was born because I am committed to making sure that other kids don’t suffer as I did. I believe that seemingly small, incremental changes in the overall dynamic of a school community can bring about change, so that everyone feels welcome and included. I believe that every school has upstanders like me, who are happy and willing to invite anyone to join the lunch table. It is my hope, with people pledging to be Ambassadors at their schools, that no one will feel left out.

To start, students can sign up with an email address or Facebook. You can create a personal profile that includes your interests.

Along with adding friends, users can also search for lunches nearby. You can also add a lunch and invite friends to enjoy.

Students can also select to be an Ambassador for their school and agree to post open lunches on the app on a regular basis that other can join them for lunch.

While my children are still in elementary school, I’m so pleased to see technology being used to truly make a difference. And Apple has even taken notice promoting it in the featured section of the App Store.

Bravo, Natalie.
