Stylishly Carry Your Nintendo Switch in Waterfield Designs’ CitySlicker

The best way to carry your Nintendo Switch console on-the-go

If you’re a gamer on-the-go, then chances are high that you have your iPhone as well as a secondary handheld gaming device, such as the Nintendo 3DS or even the new Nintendo Switch gaming console if you were lucky enough to get your hands on one so far.

The Switch is definitely one of Nintendo’s best consoles to date, and it has a lot of power since it’s a hybrid handheld and home console in one. However, for me, the real magic behind the Switch is the fact that it packs quite a punch for being a handheld, and that’s the primary way I play mine. Of course, while it’s a portable handheld gaming system, it can be rather vulnerable when you take it with you everywhere (unlike the 3DS), so you need a good way to transport it for your gaming fix anywhere, anytime. That’s where Waterfield Designs’ Nintendo Switch CitySlicker case comes into mind.

We are big fans of Waterfield Designs’ products here at AppAdvice, as I’ve reviewed their Field Muzetto laptop bag earlier this year, and my colleague Brent wrote about their Bolt backpack. So when I saw that they were coming out with a slick carrying case for the Switch, I had to give it a try for myself, especially after hearing such rad reviews about their CitySlicker Case for the Nintendo 3DS XL.

The Nintendo Switch CitySlicker is a horizontal case that is perfectly designed to snugly fit your Switch with the Joy-Cons attached to the sides of the tablet. The case itself is made of leather and ballistic nylon, with the double leather flap coming in four colors (Grizzly Brown, Black, Blue, or Crimson) to fit everyone’s tastes.

Inside the main compartment are two pockets that run the length of the case, and the plush interior is lined with a soft, no-scratch material so your Switch doesn’t get scratched up. The pocket that faces your Switch when it’s inside (screen goes towards the leather flap) has Ultrasuede on the exterior, which helps keep the screen scratch-free and cleans it at the same time. The case has firm padded stiffeners that run along the interior’s sides to keep the analog sticks in a neutral position while the Switch is in the case, and the bottom is lined with neoprene to protect the console. Right underneath the leather flap, and between the magnetic clasps that keep the case secure, are five leather slot pockets that can hold Switch game cards or microSDs. Along the back of the case is a mesh exterior pocket with a self-locking zipper that can hold small accessories or more game cards if you need them.

While the core of the CitySlicker is what I just described, Waterfield Designs does have some optional accessories that you can get with the case. These options include a carabiner, as well as shoulder and wrist straps of varying thickness. I was sent the 1” Heavy Duty Shoulder Strap accessory, which is made of a nylon material and it has heavy metal swivel snap on both ends of the strap that attach to small nylon loops on the case. This heavy duty strap can extend up to 54” in length so your Switch is comfortably at your side.

Just like with their other products, the Nintendo Switch CitySlicker is made up of incredibly high-quality materials and a lot of care was put into hand-crafting each case, as you can tell by looking at the stitching on the leather as well as the “Waterfield • Made in SF” imprint on the front. Even if you don’t go for one of the optional accessories for toting your CitySlicker around, the case itself can fit in bigger bags and backpacks.

How the Nintendo Switch CitySlicker looks with the heavy duty shoulder strap attachment

How the Nintendo Switch CitySlicker looks with the heavy duty shoulder strap attachment

I’ve been using the CitySlicker for my Nintendo Switch for the past two months, and I must say that I’m rather impressed. I did not have the CitySlicker for my New Nintendo 3DS XL before, but I’m now even tempted to pick up one of those because the quality of Waterfield bags always blows me away. But back to the CitySlicker for the Switch, it is the best way for me to carry my Switch around without having to worry about a thing.

Personally, since I use the Field Muzetto bag for my laptop, I don’t have much room in the bag to throw my CitySlicker in, so having the heavy duty shoulder strap is a godsend. In fact, I’ve been using the CitySlicker almost like a purse, as it has just enough room for all of my Switch essentials and a few other small things, such as my oil blotting sheets, a lip balm, and a battery pack, which is all I need.

I’ve taken the CitySlicker with me pretty much everywhere, and I’ve managed to toss it around in my car, when I get home, and whatever else. So far, even if I accidentally drop it, there’s been no damage whatsoever to my Switch, so the CitySlicker is not only super portable, but incredibly protective as well. Thanks to the plush interior as well as padded stiffeners, the Switch fits snugly in the case and does not move around so it takes no damage. Plus, the magnetic clasps hold well and it takes a bit of a pull to get the flap open, so you never have to worry about the console falling out.

My one qualm with the CitySlicker is getting the magnetic clasps to align together so that the case is closed shut without me having to tinker around with lining them up. I was under the impression that the magnets were hidden and tucked away inside the case material, but they’re actually more like buttons on the interior, so you have to align the flap with the closure so that they snap together. Depending on how much stuff I have in the case, it can take a bit of effort on my part to get the thing fully shut and secure, which I found a bit annoying and tedious when I’m in a hurry. However, I’m satisfied with how secure they are once fastened, so it balances out.

It’s also important to remember that the CitySlicker is a lightweight case to carry around your Switch and only the essentials, which are the Joy-Cons, a cable, game cards and microSD, and perhaps a spare battery pack for emergency charging, but it’s not designed to hold much more than that. If you need more than the basics, then the Multiplayer Pro Case would be more fitting.

The Nintendo Switch CitySlicker in Grizzly leather

Overall, I’m incredibly pleased with the CitySlicker case for my Nintendo Switch, and I think it’s definitely one of the best ways for me to carry my console around on-the-go. I’m a big fan of leather products, and Waterfield Designs has never failed me so far with their products, so I’m glad I have such a quality option for transporting my Switch. The CitySlicker’s ballistic nylon, plush interior, and leather materials are all top-notch and let me protect my handheld console with elegant minimal and style. I’m a bit sad that I can’t carry more than the bare essentials with me, but hey, minimalism is the name of the game here.

I’ve taken my Nintendo Switch with me in the CitySlicker to a variety of places (thanks to the heavy duty shoulder strap), including typical coffee shops to college campuses to theme parks and even islands. It’s been tossed around quite a bit now, but there isn’t even much wear-and-tear on the exterior, nor has my Switch taken any damage. The CitySlicker is not only made of high quality materials, but it provides a snug fit and superior protection for your console while looking stylish.

Because of the somewhat steep price tag for a carrying case, the CitySlicker is not for those who are in the market for a budget case option for their Nintendo Switch. However, if you don’t mind paying a bit more for quality protection, then the Nintendo Switch CitySlicker does not disappoint. This is also a case that will last you a long time, so it’s well worth the cost. Also having the ability to carry it around with a strap (wrist or shoulder) or a carabiner is nice too, making transport easy depending on the situation.

I recommend the Waterfield Designs’ Nintendo Switch CitySlicker case if you are searching for a superior lightweight carrying case for transporting and protecting your console. You can find the CitySlicker on the Waterfield Designs website starting at $79. The optional attachments start at $2 and go up to $20.
