Palm Confident In Its Own Patents

January 23, 2009

The Palm Pre hasn't even been released yet but that hasn't stopped anyone from pointing fingers. The Pre resembles the iPhone not only in its physical design (minus the slide-down keyboard) but also sports a few key features including a multitouch interface that Apple has patented. Steve Job's stand-in, Tim Cook, had recently commented on how he felt about the obvious patent infringement. Well, now it's Palms turn to respond and they seem fairly confident in their own patents. Palm spokesperson Lynn Fox recently confessed to Digital Daily that they aren't afraid of a lawsuit from any company.
“Palm has a long history of innovation that is reflected in our products and robust patent portfolio, and we have long been recognized for our fundamental patents in the mobile space,” she told Digital Daily. “If faced with legal action, we are confident that we have the tools necessary to defend ourselves.”
Palm is often credited in creating the smartphone and has used a single-touch interface in all of its current smartphones. Palm doesn't seem afraid of challenging any company out there with their own patents. Palm also shares a bit of history with Apple. Palm's current head of research and development, Jon Rubinstein, was once Apple's head of hardware engineering and has brought over a few of Apple's employees in the process of restructuring. Neither Apple nor Palm have named names in either of their statements but the ball seems to now be in Apple's court. It's your move Tim Cook.
