AT&T To Offer No-Commitment Pricing For iPhone

March 19, 2009

Boy Genius Report claims to have received an internal presentation for AT&T employees that reveals they will be offering the iPhone 3G commitment-free starting March 26th. According to the report, AT&T will be offering the no-commitment iPhones at $599 for the 8GB and $699 for the 16GB.  There would be a limit of one iPhone per active line in an attempt to limit the number of iPhones purchased this way.  Also, AT&T customers who are eligible for a qualified or early upgrade won't be allowed to purchase a no-commitment iPhone. After skimming over some of the presentation slides, it looks as if AT&T would have no good way of tracking these commitment-free devices once they have been purchased.  One of the slides clearly indicates:
"There is no indicator in the billing system identifying a customer purchased an iPhone 3G at the No-Commitment price.  AT&T COR stores can see the transaction through OPUS if the device was purchased through AT&T COR."
For those of you not familiar with AT&T jargon, COR simply stands for company-owned retail, and OPUS is AT&T's point-of-sale system.  So, if you want to purchase one of these bad boys, don't go to a company-owned retail store in case you want to purchase another one someday. We have no way of confirming this report, but March 26th isn't that far off so the wait and see approach will have to be employed.  In the meantime, are any of you willing to purchase a commitment-free iPhone at these prices?
