Another 32GB iPhone Placeholder And Possible AT&T Shortage
May 23, 2009
As the World Wide Developers Conference swiftly approaches, everyone seems to be getting more and more excited for the next generation iPhone launch and apparently it's not only the Apple fanboys who can't contain their excitement.
Yesterday we detailed how T-Mobile Austria decided to put a placeholder on their website for the not-yet-released 32GB iPhone, and today we have even more cases of carriers jumping the gun.
The first case comes from a BlackBerry Bold trade-up program run on behalf of AT&T. The website allows you to trade in your old phone towards the purchase of a new RIM smartphone. The slip-up is within one of the drop down menus where you must choose the product you are trading in. When you select "Apple" as the manufacturer, you are then able to select "iPhone 32GB 3G" as your trade-in product.
Our second case comes from The Boy Genius Report, where the Canadian carrier Rogers has given a few new details regarding their next-gen iPhone launch. According to one of their sources, Rogers intends to launch the new iPhone sometime in July/August. They also report that Rogers intends to launch the new iPhone the same day that it is launched in the US, and purchases will be limited to one iPhone per customer on opening day along with a few active demo units on display in stores.
Finally, AppleInsider has reported that one customer called AT&T to get his wife's iPhone replaced and the representative informed him that they no longer sell new iPhone 3Gs, they only currently have refurbished ones in stock. When the customer asked why there weren't any available, the representative simply stated that they could not disclose that information and the representative also added that they don't expect any additional stock. Within hours after reporting this isolated incident, AT&T spokesman Brad Mays denied any shortage claims and stated that this specific sales representative provided "incorrect information," but didn't elaborate any further.
We now have a fairly vast amount of information regarding the next generation iPhone, and from the looks of things, it is going to be a very exciting launch. If we are to infer anything from all of this new information, however, it's that we will be seeing a 32GB iPhone 3G sometime in July/August.
