Get Push Notifications For Twitter Mentions And Direct Messages With Boxcar

July 10, 2009

If you are still searching for a good way to receive push notifications for new Twitter mentions and direct messages, Boxcar by appremix may just fulfill that need. Boxcar is not a full featured Twitter client, it focuses solely on providing push notifications for Twitter mentions and direct messages.  Every five minutes Boxcar will check your Twitter account for new mentions and direct messages, and if there is anything new, you will receive a push notification.  Once you have received a push notification, Boxcar can then open your favorite Twitter client (Tweetie and Twitterrific are apparently the only two currently supported) from the notification itself.  It's basically a workaround for the lack of push support in all Twitter apps, but it does the job. The developer has already submitted an update to Apple that should add some more useful features, including the ability to open direct messages in either Boxcar or your favorite Twitter client, some small UI tweaks, and multiple account support. Boxcar is available in the App Store for $2.99. We have also added Boxcar to our Apps That Push You AppList.
