Android 2.0 Preview Is Out In The Wild
October 27, 2009
Google just published a video preview of the new Android 2.0. For reminder, it's iPhone OS' only real other competitor at the moment (since the Pre uses CDMA network for now) and a lot of people and companies have great expectations for it.
So what does it bring to the table ? Actually just a couple of updates, new tricks and some API's. Here is what the video presents:
- The ability for developers to stock user credentials and contacts in a centralized system with better sync capabilities.
- Quick contacts, which is probably the nicest feature, it allows you to select a contact and decide how you wanna contact him, like Facebook, Gmail, Text or Call.
- A bluetooth API that enables app connectivity (like multi player games).
- The capability to deal with various screen sizes
The new SDK is already in some lucky developers hands and should be made available soon to the rest of them.
So what does it mean for Apple ? Not much actually, those upgrades are not groundbreaking and they actually confirm what Tim Cook said about the Android platform, they are just trying to catch up.
It's unfortunate actually, having a second strong competitor in the market would be great for innovation and would benefit the customers.
Well, I guess we're gonna have to wait a little more for that.
