Apple Halts Jailbreaking

October 14, 2009

October had been a good month for jailbreaks -- until now. Apple recently was discovered shipping iPhone 3GS's with a new - jailbreak-proof - Bootrom. The new Bootrom is immune to the "24kpwn" exploit used by geohot and the dev-team.

24kpwn is a code name for 0x24000 Segment Overflow, an "exploit" used for un-tethered jailbreaks. The new, jailbreaking Bootrom, iBoot-359.3.2 reportedly started shipping last week. The Dev-Team's MuscleNerd announced on his Twitter page: "a normal untethered JB may be in jeopardy in brand new 3GS units"

and a few hours later:

"my guess is right now, refurbished iPhone 3GS units are safer bet for having older bootrom still." MuscleNerd said that it's the "first time in iPhone and iPod touch history we've seen them do a bootrom update like this." If you've tried to jailbreak your 3GS and were unsuccessful, this could be the reason. For now, unfortunately, there isn't a fix.
