We’re getting rumors about a possible new music app that is a little on the edge when it comes to the App Store approval guidelines (it’s like a trend these days).

Lala’s app (from Lala music service, recently rumored to be partnering with Google) would allow you to purchase and listen to songs directly from your iPhone for as little as 10cents per song. The trick is that your music collection won’t be stored on the device but streamed as you need it.

A further function would be the possibility of uploading your entire present music library on a remote server and being able to access it on the go. Seriously tho, can’t you do this with iDisk already ? And music streaming isn’t groundbreaking as apps like Spotify do it for a while now.

Wired nonetheless speculates that an approval of this app by Apple could possibly drive prices of online music down which would be welcome in this economy.

But would you really step out of the iTunes ecosystem for 10cents per song ?

  1. i work at a major record label and its true about a new music service. google and facebook have partnered up to form a new music provider. the official announcement will be on wed. so stay tuned.

  2. I have been using Lala.com or a while and it is an excellent service. After signing up, you run an application that analyzes your Music folder and (if it finds a song already in Lala’s database) adds it to your online library or (if a song is NOT in Lala’s library) uploaded a copy of it to the server.

When songs are purchased online as an MP3 download (for $0.89, I believe), it is immediately added to your Lala library. Alternatively, you can purchase an actual CD (for a great price) and get the streaming songs immediately or just buy the streaming version for super-cheap.

An iPhone app is the best idea yet, as it will allow me to take streaming load off of my network (à la Simplify Music) and put it on another service, but still have control over exactly what I listen to (instead of Pandora or Last.fm being in ultimate control).

  3. Lala.com is one of my favorite music sites — unlike other streaming services, I don’t have to have my computer on to listen on my iPod Touch. I do, however, need an Internet connection.

There is a loss of quality when comparing streamed music against downloaded, so consumers should be aware of that.

Awesome news, if LaLa comes to the App Store.

  4. Sure, you can do it w/ iDisk….. FOR A PRICE! Even if you do have a MobileMe acct., the space is limited… I’ve not heard about any Lala limitations on that front.

Also, the iDisk implementation on the iPhone is WEAK. Can’t even play more than 1 song in a row without jumping back to file view.

    I say, bring on Lala!!!!
