According to Digitimes, Omnivision just obtained a contract from Apple to supply the next iPhone generation with 5MP camera sensors. That’s a very welcome news since being stuck with a 3MP camera in 2009 is already borderline, but there is no way we go through 2010 with this.
Another newsworthy bit is that apparently the order would concern 40 million units, up from 20 million units they provided this year for the 3GS model.
I believe Apple should push the camera function a lot more, it’s just such a practical feature.
Don’t you love taking pictures from your iPhone?

I just hope they release a decent iPod touch with mic… and a wall charger…
The pictures that you take with the iPhone really are great. They might not have a good resolution but the pictures are just simply astonishing. What I miss is more camera options, like different filters and timer.
a flash would be nice too
I’d be more interested in adding more camera effects, a flash and a front facing camera than upping it to 5megapixel.
W/ focus the current camera is pretty good as is.
What, no front facing camera for 4G vid calls? Guess will have to wait for the 4GS (or 4G-DC ;^)…
i would rather keep there same cam add a small front cam update the speed and oled screen ill be fine
Higher resolution is okay, but what we really want is a higher quality camera, less noise, and better image quality. You can add lots of resolution and fill up your storage space with low quality images. Higher resolution by itself does not equal higher quality images – it requiries an excellent chip set and a better lens.
A flash and a more sensitive sensor even at 3MP would do more to improve iPhone photography than simply bumping up the megapixels ( a meaningless number given that monitors are limited to 2MP of resolution anyway).
From Ars Technica: “As many readers may know, packing more megapixels onto the same sized sensor generally results in smaller, less-sensitive pixels.” ~ http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/12/apple-may-bump-camera-in-next-gen-iphone-to-5-megapixels.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss
A camera is quite useful, when you don’t have a high resolution compact camera in your pocket, whereas I always have a high resolution compact camera in my pocket.
Therefore an increase in megapixels would be a nice to have, but not of great importance, as we didn’t obtain an iPhone for just the camera did we ! Would believe that that a two way camera could be good for those in conferences, etc., meaning one lens on front and back.
I second the notion that it’s not the megapixels but the quality of the sensor that is paramount and to suggest otherwise is naive.
(also, in reply to a commentor, the iPod touch current gen does have a mic in the headphone cord so you can use voice record and such.)
If the next iPhone doesn’t have a flash, I will be voyaging elsewhere for my wireless device.
Get me sufficient battery life! For someone who travels a lot and use the iPhone for business the battery life is just ridiculous. Furthermore they should improve the typing. Anyone who needs write emails the typing is a pain! Don t get me wrong I love the phone. But the two mentioned points are major shortcomings.
