Apple Announces New App Store Stats: More Than 3 Billion App Downloads

Apple today announced that more than three billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store by iPhone and iPod touch users worldwide since its launch in July 2008.
“Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months—this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”
Did you catch that little jab at the end there?  Steve Jobs obviously doesn't feel like Google's almost unveiled Nexus One, or any other mobile device for that matter, has a chance at competing with the iPhone thanks to the success of the App Store. The App Store reached one billion downloads almost nine months ago, two billion downloads a little over three months ago, and now we're at three billion.  Sure, the holiday season probably had a little something to do with this massive acceleration, but it definitely isn't the only reason, as the number of idevices keeps on increasing along with the number of apps. Any guesses on when the App Store will hit the four billion download mark?
