The Chevy Volt won't be available until later this year, maybe even early 2011, but you will be able to mess around with some of its insanely well implemented OnStar features on your iPhone or iPod touch today via the new OnStar Mobile Experience app. onstarexperience_screen1The OnStar Mobile Experience iPhone and iPod touch app allows you to get a hang of managing a Volt's charging time and many of its other features even before taking it for a drive.  The app features a fairly simple interface that allows you to view the current charge of the car, how far you can travel on that charge and the car's backup gasoline engine, and how many miles per gallon you are getting. But the OnStar app isn't just about keeping track of stats, it's also able to control a whole lot of features.  When the Volt is plugged into a power source, you will be able to start and stop charging and schedule a charge during off-peak hours to save some cash.  The app will also alert you when the vehicle is fully charged so you can hit the road as soon as possible. The OnStar app is able to control some of the Volt's other non-charging features as well, such as the ability to remotely lock and unlock, honk the horn and flash the lights, and remotely turn on the car's climate controls to ensure that the in-car environment is suitable even before getting in. The OnStar service, as with every other new Chevy vehicle, comes free for a limited time, and after that will cost $199 per year.  The OnStar Mobile Experience app is available for free, and you can preview it immediately even if you don't have a Volt.  The app will simply let you to interact with all of the data and features as if you did own one, allowing you to pretend you are über eco-friendly until the big day.
