Subatomic Studios contacted us today to discuss their plans to update a game that hasn't even been released. Fieldrunners for iPad will launch with the iPad App Store April 3rd, and as soon as it does Subatomic Studios will begin tweaking the game with the device actually in their hands. There may be a quick update with anything they learn from actually holding the device, but they have much bigger plans down the road.
Fieldrunners for iPad features all five of the maps in the iPhone version with amazingly deluxe high resolution graphics, and truly redesigned animations all for $7.99. More is coming though with brand new features that are only possible on the iPad, and are truly game changing that any other tower defense game can't even fathom. This will bring the entire genre to a whole new level with a new core feature set.
Not much could be discussed at this point, but it will be a much more social experience. Our assumption is being able to play Fieldrunners with a friend on the same iPad in ways we can't even think of, though it couldn't be confirmed nor denied. The new features claim to "double the fun" if that's any indication.
Subatomic Studios also said that they plan to support free and paid DLC for the iPad as well as the iPhone and iPod Touch. New additions will be free for the coming months especially this new core feature set. New maps will be coming as well, and any paid dlc content will be part of an update that provides free content as well.
I was also able to find out more about Fieldrunners for iPad. The game screenshots show half of a map, but it was confirmed you can easily play seeing the whole map at once and see all of the animations as well. Speaking of animations there is a whole new engine providing different death animations of each Fieldrunner. They will collapse differently, be blasted off randomly, and even have some x-ray look on electrocution from the Tesla Towers.
We were provided with five high resolution screenshots of Fieldrunners for iPad to truly see the difference and what Subatomic Studios has been working on. When I saw these my mouth simply dropped open from the stark difference between the iPad and iPhone versions. Please click to see them full iPad size.
