Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Runs Into The App Store

April 20, 2010

Sega's classic platformer, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, is now available in the App Store and no, it's not a part of the long-rumored official Sega emulator.  For better or worse, it's actually a standalone game like the original. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the iPhone and iPod touch, you get put back into the shoes of the feisty little blue hedgehog armed with a new super spin dash as you attempt to stop Dr. Robotnik from collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds which are the only things that can power his Death Egg. Sonic 2 is the first time Miles Prower, or the little fox better known as Tails, makes an appearance in a Sonic game.  Tails is a playable character that is able to hover momentarily with his two tails. The game features all of the original enemies, power-ups, and levels you would expect, along with the ability to play in a full screen up-scaled view or a small native resolution view with the on-screen controls actually below the gameplay area instead of on it. According to early user reviews, Sonic 2 suffers from the same slowdowns and performance issues as the original did on older iDevices, so you will get the best bang for your buck if you are running an iPhone 3GS.  Apparently some of the slowdowns can be mitigated by running the game in the smaller native resolution view, but they aren't completely removed. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the iPhone and iPod touch is now available in the App Store for $5.99, which is the exact same price that the original Sonic is currently going for.
