"Truckloads" Of iChat Hints Found In iPhone OS 4

April 11, 2010

Now that Apple finally introduced some sort of multitasking in iPhone OS, it's time to focus on all these other features we're still missing. While Flash support is pretty much doomed, video conferencing and front-facing cameras on the other hand might be closer than we think.

Indeed, the iPhone OS 4 beta released this week to developers apparently contains an important amount of hints pointing at some video conference capabilities. Not only did TUAW find a constantly running process in iPhone OS 4 labelled "iChatAgent", but 9to5mac was able to come across literally "truckloads" of references to:

moderators, chat rooms, encrypted video conferences and other features

They even found what they believe to be an Apple iPhone Video Chat server at the following address:

https://17.254.3.138/WebObjects/VCInit.woa/wa/

Trying to connect to it will however not get you anything since it would be meant to work with iChat on the iPhone.

If you look at all this, added to the past rumors that point in this direction and the fact that Apple only presented backgrounding capabilities for VoIP clients, Navigation, but no IM apps last week; I think we can feel pretty confident that the next iPhone should feature both iChat and a front-facing camera.

This better be true, I'm dying for an iPhone Chatroulette.
