Apple Becomes The Biggest US Phone Maker

May 2, 2010

With 8.8 million iPhones sold last quarter, Apple just outperformed the former market leader, Motorola, which apparently "only" pushed 8.5 millions of its 119 (facepalm) different phone models out the doors during the same period. For Apple, a company that entered the market only about three years ago, this is clearly a success. Alright, the main underlying explanation is actually that Motorola is taking a beating, and not a small one when you think that four years ago, they would sell almost 50 million handsets per quarter. In a world of smartphones however, Apple is clearly taking the lead. Will Apple keep outperforming the market like this? It might, but that doesn't really matter. Apple's main competitor in this sector right now is not a manufacturer, it's Google's mobile OS: the Android. This one is however being installed on many phones by a dispersed number of manufacturers. Therefore, these kind of comparisons don't really mean much anymore. So good job, but the fight isn't over.
