Skype Reschedules Its Controversial 3G Calling Fee

May 30, 2010

As we've told you, yesterday's Skype 2.0 update finally brought iPhone users the possibility to place calls over 3G networks. This came with a catch however as Skype announced that they're planning to charge a fee for this feature, starting end of August.

This change of their "free skype-to-skype calls tradition" gave them a lot of bad press and a quick glance at the App's reviews will you a good idea of how annoyed everybody is about this. Well, interestingly enough it seems like Skype is reconsidering this decision now as they have just decided to delay the implementation of this new fee.

Indeed, the description of the Skype app 2.0 update has just been modified. It now states that the fee will only be introduced at the end of the year, and not at the end of August as previously announced. It's a bit surprising as we're still waiting for any sort of official announcement about this, but it's making me think that they're strongly reconsidering it.

Sounds like progress right?

Update:

Skype has now posted information about the update on its blog (link). It confirms that the fee won't be introduced until the end of the year as they're still working on pricing.
