Rhapsody Update Adds Background Audio Playback

July 19, 2010

Rhapsody has just joined the ranks of other iPhone music providing apps like Pandora, Last.fm, and quite a few others by finally adding background audio playback for iOS 4 devices. Rhapsody v2.0.2 allows you to play streaming or downloaded music, exit the app, and still have those tunes blaring wherever you go.  The update also adds support for interaction with accessories that support Apple's multimedia controls. Other fixes and enhancements include:
  • Many crashing fixes.
  • Improved handling of various types of missing or corrupt content.
  • Improved handling of network timeouts on application launch.
  • Improved playback user interface behavior and performance.
  • Fixed bug with adding Top Tracks to Playlist.
Rhapsody, the app, is available for free, but in order to utilize the service you will need a monthly subscription.  Right now the company offers two different options: Rhapsody Premier ($10/month), which allows you to stream music to a single mobile device, and Rhapsody Premier Plus ($15/month), which allows you to use the service on up to three different mobile devices. Next on Rhapsody's list is the addition of an iPad-optimized UI.  The company has stated that it should be arriving "later this year." [Thanks to Tony for the tip!]
