WSJ To Bloomberg: Apple Didn't Know Anything

July 16, 2010

Hours after Bloomberg reported that Apple knew about the iPhone antenna issue, the Wall Street Journal has thrown cold water on the entire story. It quotes an Apple spokesman who said his company knew nothing beforehand about the problem.

According to this story:
In response to the (Bloomberg) article, an Apple spokesman said, "We challenge Bloomberg BusinessWeek to produce anything beyond rumors to back this up. It's simply not true." A spokesman for Bloomberg News said it stands by its story.
Bloomberg reported that an Apple senior antenna engineer told Apple executives about possible problems with the iPhone 4. In addition, Bloomberg claimed that an unnamed Apple carrier partner had also warned the Cupertino-based company. Each warning occurred prior to the June 24th release of Apple's fourth generation iPhone. The growing controversy has gone all the way to Washington, where Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) on Thursday wrote an open letter to Steve Jobs, demanding a "permanent fix" to the iPhone 4 antenna controversy. Whatever the solution, Schumer hopes there is no cost to consumers. The dog days of summer don't often see this big a technology story develop. It will be interesting to see how (or if) Apple calms the waters at its iPhone 4 media event tomorrow afternoon. If anything, it would be nice to see some sort of clarity so iPhone 4 owners can move on to other topics.
