Clicker.com Now On Your iDevice
August 25, 2010
Clicker.com, the first official iPhone client app for the video viewing and library site has arrived to the iPhone/iPod touch. Released this week, it brings Clicker.com's entire directory onto the small screen.
The concept is an interesting one. Instead of hosting anything, the company indexes legal videos that are accessible in streaming online and focuses on helping users discover and navigate professional content hosted by rights-holders. While some of the streaming video content Clicker.com indexes is available for free, the service also points to paid services like Amazon Video-on-Demand and Netflix Watch Instantly.
One of the best things about the app is its ability to search for videos that are available for the iPhone. How many times have you attempted to view a video on the iPhone, only to find out that it wasn't available thanks to Flash limitations? This app eliminates the need to weed out iPhone-compatible videos.
In addition, users can limit searches to only videos that are free. This is an added plus.
Clicker.com''s database includes over 600,000 professionally produced, legal videos from more than 1,400 sources. This includes over 7,000 broadcast quality shows and more than 50,000 movies.
Also, the site's recent addition of social capabilities are also available within the app. Users create profiles and "check in" to certain videos and then can share what they're watching with friends. Plus, you can rate videos and tell your friends on location-based services such as Foursquare and Gowalla.
My one criticism is that search limitations are done at the show level. For example, if I only want to see free videos that are available for the iPhone, this search process is cumbersome. Plus, it could be confusing for many users.
Overall, however, the the Clicker.com app is very intuitive and works very well, so make sure to check it out.
