Hotmail Gets Exchange Support - Adds Push Email, Calendar & Contacts To iOS
August 31, 2010
Good news for you diehard Hotmail users out there, as Microsoft finally got around (this week) to rolling out Exchange support for its Hotmail accounts.
This means that from now on, you can natively add your Hotmail account to your iOS mail app under the Exchange tab. This will give you push email (your emails will arrive in real-time), as well as push Calendar and Contact sync (if you add an event or a contact online, it gets pushed to your iOS device right away).
It's an awesome upgrade if you're using a Hotmail account. It's a bit of a battery and data hog, as it will keep your iOS device connected to Microsoft around the clock. Nevertheless, it makes the service much more interesting than it was. Here is how to set it up:
1. Go to the Settings app, then "Mail, Contacts, Calendar" and hit "Add account". 2. There, select Microsoft Exchange and fill out the form as I did above (using your own credentials). The server field will only appear once you hit next so don't worry about it at first. 3. Pick which services you want and you're all set.I don't know how great their service is. But, after all, it's their own product so they hopefully know how to make it work just right.
