QuickAdvice: Carry Dictionary.com In Your Pocket, Minus the Ads

August 14, 2010
Dictionary.com - Dictionary and Thesaurus - No Ads by Dictionary.com, LLC ($1.99) is the ad-free version of the original Dictionary.com iPhone app. With this premium version of Dictionary.com's fine iPhone app, you get all the same features, just minus the ads that seemed to annoy users in the free version. There is full access to all of Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com to satisfy those that need to look up words on-the-fly, fully useable in either portrait or landscape mode. When searching for a word in either the dictionary or thesaurus, words will automatically come up as you type, which helps out a lot when you're looking up a word you don't necessarily know how to spell correctly the first time. Find the word, then select it and you'll be taken to the definition in Dictionary.com or Thesaurus.com. In the Dictionary section, you get the full definition, audio / pronunciation, what type of word it is (noun, verb, etc), and other words that stem from it. There's even a bonus Origin section to satisfy your hunger for knowledge. If you've looked up multiple words, you can go through them again by the arrows on either side of the search field. This helps out a lot if you need to backtrack. The Thesaurus section also has the same appearance as the Dictionary, except that it's orange and only has simple definitions and then lists off all the synonyms as well as antonyms if you need them. You can go through the words you've looked up just like in the Dictionary section. If you're just a vocabulary junkie and want to learn a new word every day, there's a Word of the Day section. In here, you get a 'Word of the Day' in both English and Spanish. The English word will have an option for audio pronunciation, though the Spanish one won't. The Recent tab will allow you to view your recent words. But the greatest thing about it is that it will let you view whether you looked it up in the dictionary (blue arrow), thesaurus (orange arrow), or if it was a Word of the Day (blue 'W'). If you want to clear out your recent words, just hit the Edit button and check off the words and hit the delete button. This is an excellent dictionary app and one to highly consider shelling out the $2 for if you are a heavy user of Dictionary.com for all your definition an synonym needs. This app also can work offline, since it contains all the data within the app. So if you need to look up a word while you are reading a book on the train that goes underground, Dictionary.com will be there for you. This is a great app and well worth the measly $2 introduction price. I'd hurry up and get it before the price goes up! [gallery columns="4"]
