Dropbox Update Adds Offline Caching, Retina Support, And More
September 22, 2010
Dropbox, everyone's favorite free online file storage and sharing solution, has been updated with a bunch of new features that are intended to not only make file uploading and downloading easier, but also more eye-catching.
Dropbox v1.3 brings a new UI into the picture that, among other things, allows you to view your upload progress, while also adding Retina support for those iPhone 4 and new iPod touch owners out there. Also new in the visual department is the ability to view files full-screen in landscape mode on the iPad. A button can now be found in both versions of the app that allows you to create folders as well.
As for the improvements to the back-end of Dropbox, it can now automatically cache recently opened files in order to be viewed offline, supports uploading of HD video and high-resolution photos from the iPhone 4, and supports multitasking, allowing iOS 4 users to upload and download files in the background.
The company has also announced a new App Directory that lists and displays all of the apps that use Dropbox's services. The page allows you to break down apps by platform, including iPhone and iPad, and gives descriptions and direct links to the apps in the App Store.
Dropbox is available in the App Store for free, and is compatible with all iDevices. You will need to sign up for a free account -- or paid if you need more space -- in order to utilize the app, which can be done at Dropbox.com.
