My Artists Lite Is As Great As The Original App Without The Price

October 7, 2010
In August, AppAdvice profiled a nifty app called My Artists for the iPhone/iPod touch. This week, its creators have released a Lite version of the app that is just as nice. Best of all, it's free. My Artists Lite, like the full version of the app, was created by Top Drawer Apps. It scans your iPhone’s list of songs and gives you more information on the artist. In addition to providing a lengthy biography, the app also shows you the list of other albums by the artist. For example, I have the song “If Everyone Cared” by Nickelback on my iPhone. The app knows this and shows me other albums released by the group. Each listing shows you the songs available on each album, plus links to YouTube videos of the artist playing the song.

Best of all, you can play all of your existing songs from within the app. By doing so, you have at your fingertips information on each artist, plus a picture of the artist and of the album itself. This is handled by an “Explore” button at the top right corner of the app. However, what neither app will do, is give you a link back to iTunes to purchase additional songs by the artist. While I don't have a problem with this, others might. Just keep that in mind. The Lite version has one key limitation: it will only scan half the songs on your playlist. Still, it’s a great way to try the app before spending a dime. My Artists and My Artists Lite are available today in the App Store. The full version is $2.99.
