Google Search Dominates iPhone Market

Google Search Dominates iPhone Market

October 19, 2010
Google continues to dominate search in the iPhone market, and no one else is even close. According to a new report from Chitika, Google controls 96.96% of the market. Of that, 49% of Google searches come from within Mobile Safari, 42.24% from the Google homepage and 8.68% from Google’s own iPhone app. Yahoo (2.25%) and Bing (0.58%) aren’t even close.

According to the report:
Essentially, the Google App can stand on its own as the second largest search engine on the iPhone. Yahoo! registers as the next search engine behind Google, but its 2.25% falls short of the Google App’s reach. Bing is difficult to gauge, as traffic from the Bing app cannot be tracked at this time. However, comparing the number of ratings for the Bing and Google apps in iTunes, Bing traffic could be anywhere between 1% and 4%. At the highest estimate, all of Bing’s traffic is still only about half of the Google app.
Google remains the default search option on the iPhone. This is despite talks earlier this year that suggested Microsoft's Bing would take over that position. While not the default option, Bing was introduced as a search option on the iPhone beginning with iOS 4 in June. It joined Google and Yahoo! as search alternatives.
